Mmmmm: Guacamole

March 9, 2011

When I’m not posting healthy meal ideas, I will be posting other delicious recipes.

Today’s recipe?

  • 1 avocado
  • Salt (optional)
  • Pepper (optional)
  • Garlic powder (optional)
  • Sauteed, raw, or powdered onion (optional)
  • Tomato (optional)
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Sour cream (optional)

Only one required ingredient—avocado—and a lot of optional ingredients.

An avocado should be a greenish-brown & soft to the touch

  1. Cut avocado in half along the longest side.
    Cut avocado in half
  2. Remove the pit.
  3. Spoon avocado out of peel.
  4. For this step, you have a couple of options:
    a. Mush avocado with a fork in a bowl. (My personal preference because it’s chunkier.)
    b. Chop avocado in  a food chopper. (Hubby prefers a smoother guacamole.)

    Mash avocado with a fork
  5. Once the avocado is a paste-like consistency, add any of the optional ingredients to your taste.
Add salt, pepper, tomatoes, or other add-ins to taste

I always add salt and pepper. Tomatoes and lemon juice are also good additions. Onion powder and garlic are good also. Sour cream allows for a very smooth guacamole. Mat and I disagree here sometimes. I prefer a simple guacamole, and he wants a more complex guacamole, but either way, guacamole is great!

    And now you have guacamole!
  6. Use fresh guacamole to top your favorite tex-mex dishes, like fajitas, quesadillas, salads and tortilla chips.
Top tacos, nachos, fajitas, and more with fresh avocado

Guacamole is best when served within 3 hours of preparation. The fresher, the better!

Fun facts about avocados:

  • Avocados are a fruit.
  • The average avocado has 250 calories.
  • You can grow your own avocado tree. (I might attempt this, but I don’t have a very green thumb.)
  • Fresh avocado is delicious on sandwiches and salads. Some countries even use avocados in their desserts!
